International Mission Of The Month

Cheryl Urena

Romania

Romania has a tragic history. After Communist leader Ceausescu and his wife were executed in 1989, more than 100,000 children were found hidden away in state institutions. Even today, more than 4,000 babies are abandoned in Romanian hospitals each year. The ministry of Touched Romania was birthed to rescue those babies and place them with loving families. Yet babies continued to be abandoned, so God enlarged the vision and the Hagar Home maternal center was established in 2005. The Hagar Home provides mothers with an alternative to abandoning their babies! This 24/7 home supports vulnerable pregnant mothers and/or new mothers and provides a safe and loving environment for them to bond with their babies, find new hope in Christ, and learn the skills they need to care for their children. By saving the mother, the child is also saved and the cycle of abandonment is stopped. My name is Cheryl Urena and I am currently serving with Touched Romania and the Hagar Home. My life experience of raising four children in the midst of a dysfunctional marriage and early widowhood makes me passionate to bring hope to these hurting single mothers and their children. My own children are now adults, and God has called me to 'leave the nest,' too. The past does not disqualify anyone from pursuing God's purposes. Like Hagar in the Bible (Genesis 16, especially verse 13), God sees these vulnerable women and children. He calls us to defend them, pursue justice on their behalf, and to touch and transform their lives with the love of Christ. To protect the privacy and safety of the women and children we serve, I am not always able to post photos online, but a video overview of the ministry is available at Click here To see a video . This video was produced in 2011 and since then, Touched Romania has also established the Agape Home, with transitional apartments for former residents of the Hagar Home. I have also served the moms and children living there, especially since one baby has been in and out of the hospital: the mother is required to stay with the baby at the hospital so we take turns sleeping at the apartment with his three-year old brother. In addition to the Hagar Home and Agape Home, Touched Romania offers a foster care program, counseling, social reintegration, occupational therapy, vocational training, educational opportunities for both the moms and their children, and trains and coordinates local volunteers to visit hospitals and institutions to care for abandoned children as well as children in cancer wards. Thank you for your partnership as together we restore hope and transform the lives of the vulnerable women and children of Romania!

Jessie and Jari Rodriguez

Nicaragua, South America

Dear Family and Friends,
The violence and deaths of the social political crisis in Nicaragua have slowed down since the peak of summer. The road barricades, called ‘tranques’ have been removed by the government. Police and paramilitary groups were sent in to remove the barricades by force. The Nicaraguan people are still enacting civic protests.
The largest commercial alliance in Nicaragua, the Superior Counsel of Private Enterprise, has called for national strikes. During these strikes every business in Nicaragua is closed. Nationwide commercial activity stops for twenty-four hours. Gas stations, markets, restaurants and other businesses close down in civic protest. Even the largest open air market in Central America, Mercado Oriental, closes its shops. In September we witnessed a third national strike, calling for the release of political prisoners. The effects of this type of economic protest are impressive. The roads are empty and the air is silent. Very few people are out in the city. Imagine every business in the entire state of Michigan closing for twenty-four hours! Nothing along Interstate 94 is being transported. Every Speedway, Meijer and Walmart is closed!

Pastor Jeremiah Kuria

Mai Mahiu, Kenya

My name is Pastor Jeremiah Kuria, currently serving here in Kenya with Africa Inland Church -Ruiru. I am serving a church in one of the rural villages in Kenya and at a very humble village called Ruiru in Mai Mahiu. I also run a ministry that empowers women and needy children with special needs known as Ubuntu foundation. Our church has been growing steadily over the last couple of years. We now have about 70 adults and 125 young children. Due to the poverty in these dry or semi arid area we work to meet not only the spiritual needs but also the physical needs. We have to feed a few families who can’t make ends meet and also put effort in looking for ways to help them provide for themselves. I preach every Sunday and my wife have organized another team to support children with evening and weekend tuition. Some children in seventh grade couldn’t read or write and we needed to intervene. So far, the ministry has been going well. We feel blessed. The needs are many but we live one day at a time.
